Edition 07:
Fernhurst

ANGLE’s second project in Studley Park, Kew, Fernhurst is brought to you by the same team behind Fenwick— Edition Office and Eckersley Garden Architecture. Due to planning restrictions, this is one of the last remaining development sites located in a Studley Park side street, yet offers the rare advantage of being only 300 metres from Kew Junction. Comprising just seventeen apartments and three homes on a one acre-site, this is a low-density proposal characterised by generous setbacks and oversized gardens.

Apartments

Cultivating a sense of sanctuary, the apartments at Fernhurst are seamlessly intertwined with nature’s ebb and flow. The brick facade serves as a backdrop for an abundance of flourishing vegetation while establishing a tangible feeling of permanence – as if the building has existed here for many years. Flooded with natural light, each apartment is distinguished by lofty, open-plan living areas, extending seamlessly onto to verdant outdoor spaces. Throughout, the materiality is warm, tactile yet innately pared-back, engaging in a harmonious dialogue with the architectural fabric. Functional yet generous; ethereal yet solid, the apartments of Fernhurst place lifestyle and connection at the forefront of every design decision.

Heritage House

Fernhurst’s existing heritage house has been sensitively restored and thoughtfully expanded – preserving its distinct charm while creating opportunities for heightened liveability. Fostering ever-present connections to nature, the ground-floor flows out to a generous north-facing courtyard, cultivating an established and considered garden experience. Inside, careful attention is paid to preserving the original home’s intricate details, while innovative adjustments to the rooflines infuse the interiors with luminosity and airiness. Wrapped in lush vegetation, the facade blends copper accents with deep terracotta brickwork, promising a beautifully patina with age.

House

Echoing the tranquil ambience of the main apartment building, the two homes of Fernhurst are designed to blur the boundaries between landscape and living space. The facade also embraces light, tonal brickwork, presenting as a singular structure incorporating robust columns and stepped balustrades. Both homes integrate private, north-facing courtyards, where lush landscaping entwines with Stawell Street’s century-old canopy trees. Designed to foster prevailing indoor-outdoor connections, the living spaces and sleeping quarters all connect to covered, north-facing terraces – creating a boundless sense of space and serenity. Understated materials are enhanced by lofty proportions to open the homes up even further.
